Dressing up for the party season
Are you someone who has a moment of panic when the Christmas invitations start to arrive? Do the words ‘what am I going to wear’ fill your mind, followed by memories of the ‘old favourite’ you‘ve worn to the last 3 Christmas parties, a number of weddings and other functions. Or do you think of the collection of ‘panic purchases’ that are sitting unloved in your wardrobe (you know the ones – bought at the last minute, worn once, then left in the wardrobe because the colour, cut or sizing isn’t quite right). Well, you’re not alone, so do yourself a favor this year, head out early and buy yourself something you really love.
Firstly realise you have a number of options with party wear. Number one is a pair of dress trousers and an evening top. By evening top I mean something that is a little different from your usual clothing. For instance it has nice fabric texture (eg. silky, sheer, lace or sparkly) with a flattering neckline. Those with larger chests should stick to lower necklines (but above the cleavage) whereas smaller chested women may like to choose a halter neck, which is really flattering and not normally worn day to day. Both tops can be worn with a small wrap cardigan or shrug if you don’t want to expose your arms. At the moment Max has some lovely textured lace tops that are ideal for dressing up with nice trousers.
Your second option is the skirt and evening top combination. Every body shape suits a gradual A-line skirt. The skirt is fitted over your thighs and falls to be slightly fuller past this point. It should end either just above or just below the knee as this is the slimmest part of your leg. This modern style is so flattering and teamed with pantyhose and colourful shoes looks feminine and pretty.
My preferred clothing option for Christmas parties is the party dress and this outfit needs no co-ordination. This season it’s all about colour (bold and beautiful), patterns (pretty and floral) and interesting textures (lace). There are a lot of dresses out there and heaps of flattering styles. Pagani has some excellent choices. Remember we still need to see your shape, so dresses with a nice fit down the side and maybe a knot, twist or band under the bust are immensely flattering. Max also has some pretty options, including some that have interesting single drape sleeve details. Jacqui-E always stock a great range of nicely shaped dresses, and I recently spotted some flattering ones in floral.
If time or money is not going to stretch to a new outfit then the key to feeling great is adding those special touches with accessories. It’s amazing how even the most non-descript outfit can be transformed by a fabulous, chunky, modern necklace or bracelet. So if it is going to be your usual black dress this year, pick a really beautiful bright colour that you love – or that you always get compliments on – and add this to your outfit in the way of fabulous shoes, a bag or an interesting necklace. Most importantly, enjoy yourself, look good, feel great and all the very best for the Christmas season.
